When Offcuts Tell a Story

When Offcuts Tell a Story

Some pieces begin with a sketch. Some begin with a material. This collection began with a conversation and a cardboard box full of beautiful wood scraps.

Dowina - a small family guitar workshop based not far from us in Slovakia - were looking for someone who could give a second life to their offcuts. When a guitar body is cut from a plank of tonewood, what remains are small, beautifully grained fragments: too precious for the bin, too small for another instrument. They needed a maker who would see value in them. We did.

Those fragments of wood - each one a byproduct of someone's future instrument - became the beating heart of this collection. We laser cut every dachshund body from Dowina's offcuts. The grain lines that run across each little dog are the same lines that would have run across the back or front of a guitar body. There is something quietly wonderful about that.

Then came the fabric.

One of the necklaces in this collection is a bandana style -- the dachshund hangs not from a metal chain, but from a strip of printed fabric worn loosely around the neck. That fabric comes from Gratiola, a local illustrator and designer who creates scarves carrying her signature hand-drawn illustrations. Every print run produces a handful of test prints and misprints -- technically imperfect, commercially unsellable, but visually alive. Gratiola passed them on to us. We cut them into bandanas. Now they carry dachshunds.

Three small family businesses. Three sets of hands. Materials that were heading nowhere in particular, now heading somewhere together.

We think about sustainability carefully at DORUZOVA. We don't lead with it loudly -- our main material is acrylic, and we believe in being honest about that. But moments like this collection feel genuinely meaningful. Up to 90% of the materials in these five pieces are recycled or upcycled. Not because we engineered it that way for a label, but because three neighbors decided to share what they had.

That is what small, independent makers can do when they know each other. They turn each other's leftovers into something worth wearing.

The Little Rebels collection is five pieces: three necklaces and two brooches, each featuring a long-bodied, unapologetically charming dachshund in bright pink or lime green, paired with the warm grain of Dowina's exotic wood. They are cheerful. They are a little sassy. And every single one carries a small, true story.
